EUCC-The Coastal Union led a network initiative within
the INTERREG IIIC Programme (2004-06) – the CoPraNet
network - in partnership with 20 coastal councils
and institutes, who have taken up the challenge to collaborate
and exchange views to develop a transparent, international
quality information programme for coastal destinations.
Sectoral approaches to coastal development are no longer
a sustainable option. Coastal regions and local authorities
are using ICZM planning to lead to a sustainable economic
development. A number of actions must be implemented along
the coast to improve their sustainability. The 18 QualityCoast
milestones developed in the INTERREG IIIC project CoPraNet
provide the management issues which need to be addressed.
They were elaborated with the Gothenburg and Lisbon Agendas
in mind since the aim was to formulate a management programme
which, when implemented, would lead to the sustainable use
of European coastal services by its communities. They laid
out WHAT was required for local/regional municipalities
to implement a sustainable and integrated, cross-cutting
management approach and cover all six sub-themes of Priority
2 of the INTERREG IV C call.
The CoPraNet-QualityCoast network partners are willing
to continue contributing for the consolidation and implementation
of the QualityCoast programme. In this respect, the CoPraNet-QualityCoast
partnership, in cooperation with new partner organisation
in various new regions prepared the submission of a new
proposal to the new INTERREG
IV C Programme - QualityCoast - The future face
of integrated management for coastal sustainability.
This partnership aims to continue support and liaise with
ongoing initiatives to ensure the practitioners involvement
in the development of sustainable coastal management practices
in Europe.
